Somaliland sentences poet Naema to three years jail

A court in hargeysa had sentenced Naema Ahmed Qorane to three years jail following her advocacy for Somali unity.

The Marodi-jeh regional court had convicted Ahmed of spreading false propaganda against Somaliland and of forming a campaign against Somaliland in a foreign country (i.e Somalia).

The prosecutor, Mubarak Abdi Ismail, stated those charges in the court and the judge sentenced her to three years of jail.

Neama was arrested on January 27; upon her return to her native Somaliland after visiting Mogadishu.

There has been ongoing campaign to pressure the Hargeisa administration to have her released.

The court did not state whether an appeal could be taken from the verdict just like other verdicts made before.

Human rights activist has so many times accused Somaliland of suppressing people from expressing their ideas.

Neama has been in jail for 67; days prior to her sentence by the Somaliland court.
